International Joint Commission

Canada and the United States created the International Joint Commission because they recognized that each country is affected by the other’s actions in lake and river systems along the border. The International Joint Commission prevents and resolves disputes between the United States of America and Canada under the 1909 Boundary Waters Treaty and pursues the common good of both countries as an independent and objective advisor to the two governments.

You are invited to a webinar for New York State, Ontario and Quebec elected officials on high water levels in Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River. The webinar will be held on Monday, December 9th from 1:00pm (EST) to 2:30pm (EST). Hosted by the International Joint Commission (IJC) and the International Lake Ontario-St. Lawrence River Board (Board), this webinar will explain how Lake Ontario outflows are regulated when inflows to the lake and St. Lawrence River are extremely high, and what can reliably be done to reduce coastal damages. It will also explain the IJC and the Board’s role and the limits of what regulation can do in extraordinary circumstances.
