This evening’s call was hosted by Pennsylvania State Senator Mario Scavello of the 40th District. Senator Scavello informed participants that he serves as Chairman of the Senate Game and Fisheries Committee and Vice Chairman of the Senate Consumer Protection & Professional Licensure Committee. In response to several questions regarding taxes, especially school property taxes, Senator Scavello said the first thing that needs to be addressed is the state pension issue. He explained that, if the pension issue is not addressed, the increase in pension obligations will continue to limit increases to education funding. Senator Scavello emphasized the importance of expanded career and technical education and commended the Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology for their dedication to preparing students for skilled careers and trades. He advised that in order to create jobs and bring industry into Pennsylvania, we must have a skilled workforce. Senator Scavello answered many questions and concerns expressed by participants, including issues of regarding economic development, transportation, and natural gas production in Pennsylvania.
