BrightFocus Foundation hosted this live, interactive event to discuss age-related macular degeneration (AMD) with special guest speakers Dr. Sandra Block, Professor and Director of School-Based Research at the Illinois College of Optometry and Dr. Christina Morettin, Chief of Urgent Eye Care Services and Assistant Professor at the Illinois College of Optometry. Host Michael Buckley, Vice-president, Public Affairs at BrightFocus Foundation, spoke with Dr. Block and Dr. Morettin who shared information about both environmental and genetic risk factors that are associated with AMD. Dr. Block and Dr. Morettin stressed the importance of receiving annual eye exams to support healthy vision and early intervention of eye disease. Dr. Morettin addressed the Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) in reference to treatment for AMD and informed participants about the differences between the two types of AMD (wet and dry). Participants were able to ask questions during this live event, and addressed topics such as why AMD is on the rise, prevention of eye disease and populations more at risk for macular degeneration.
