AARP Utah held this telephone town hall meeting to discuss current scams targeting members in Utah and ways Utahns can protect themselves against identity theft and fraud. The meeting was hosted by AARP Utah State Director Alan Ormsby, with special guests Keith Woodwell, Director of the Utah Division of Securities, and Daniel O’Bannon, Director of the Utah Division of Consumer Protection. Many callers asked questions about how to avoid fraudulent schemes pitched to them over the telephone, Internet, and through the mail. Directors Woodwell and O’Bannon were able to provide tips on how to avoid fraud and what to do if participants on the call suspect they have been defrauded. Participants on the call were also notified about the AARP Fraud Watch Network, available to AARP members and non-members, and invited to receive fraud alerts and information from the site at aarp.org/fraudwatchnetwork. A DVD with a “Fraud 101” presentation by Mr. Woodwell was also sent to callers seeking more fraud prevention material.
