The Pennsylvania State Senate Republican Caucus held the fifth and final “A Commonwealth Crisis” telephone town hall to talk about the heroin and opioid addiction epidemic and the legislature’s efforts to combat it. State Senator Gene Yaw, representing Pennsylvania’s 23rd Senatorial district, was joined by a panel of experts to answer participant questions: Barry Denk, Director of The Center for Rural Pennsylvania, Dr. Brad Miller, Program Director and Director of Medical Education at the Williamsport Family Medicine Residency at UPMC Susquehanna Health, Marie Plumer, Single County Authority substance abuse administrator for Venango County, and Andy Watson, Potter County District Attorney. The diverse topics of discussion included the importance of educating the public about the risk of dependence when taking opioids for only a short time, the positive effects of Pennsylvania’s drug courts as an aid to recovery, and the available funding options for someone who wishes to find medical treatment.
